atlanto-occipital joint - the joint between the atlas (first
cervical vertebra) and the occipital bone. Normal joint
extension, measured as the angle
between the erect and extended planes of occlusal surface of upper teeth,
is approximately 35 degrees.

percent of oxygen in an inspired breath, ranging from 21% (room

laryngopharynx - the region of the
pharynx
that lies behind the larynx. It extends from the hyoid
bone (at the end of the oropharynx) to
the esophagus.

- the region of the pharynx
that lies above the soft palate. It begins just posterior
to the internal nasal cavity and extends to the
oropharynx.

oropharynx
- the region
of the pharynx
that lies behind the mouth. It begins at the
nasopharynx and extends to the hyoid
bone, where the laryngopharynx
begins.
oro-pharyngeal axis -

region comprised of the
nasopharynx and
oropharynx that begins just posterior to the internal nasal
cavity
and extends to the hyoid bone
