atlanto-occipital joint - the joint between the atlas (first cervical vertebra) and the occipital bone.  Normal joint extension, measured as the angle between the erect and extended planes of occlusal surface of upper teeth, is approximately 35 degrees.

cricothyroid cartilage -

FIO2 - (also written as FiO2) - fraction of inspired oxygen.  The percent of oxygen in an inspired breath, ranging from 21% (room air) to 100%.

 

functional residual capacity (FRC) - The amount of gas left in the lung after a normal, non-forced exhalation.

laryngopharynx - the region of the pharynx that lies behind the larynx.  It extends from the hyoid bone (at the end of the oropharynx) to the esophagus.

nasopharynx - the region of the pharynx that lies above the soft palate.  It begins just posterior to the internal nasal cavity and extends to the oropharynx.

oropharynx - the region of the pharynx that lies behind the mouth.  It begins at the nasopharynx and extends to the hyoid bone, where the laryngopharynx begins.

 

oro-pharyngeal axis -

pharynx - a region comprised of the nasopharynx and oropharynx that begins just posterior to the internal nasal cavity and extends to the hyoid bone
